Daniel Omotosho: ‘Excellence can never be discriminated’

Daniel OmotoshoExcellence can never be discriminated, whether you are white, black or red.
There are enormous opportunities all around us today, only if we look carefully and act strategically.
We will succeed greatly and achieve much if we solve problems and add value.

Running a business in Poland as an African migrant has been very adventurous and challenging. Not having any social ties in Poland makes it more challenging.

One of the most difficult huddle is the office bureaucracy, starting from registering your company, obtaining work permits, tax identification number, KRS number, REGON number , financial reporting , maintaining employee payroll, renewing residency based on running your company and tax regulations.

To survive and succeed in such an environment you have to be strong willed, courageous and have a thick skin. As a foreigner there is a huge demand on you to make profit, employ certain number of citizens, pay decent salary in other for your business to be considered as beneficial to the economy. These requirements might be difficult to meet at the early stage of the business, but persistence and hard work will pay off in the long run. You have to make sure your service or product is excellent and reliable as this is the pathway to sustaining the business and its success

Lessons from the past:

  • Find out all the basic information about your line of business before starting (regulations, registrations etc.).
  • Invest in a business with trusted indigenous partners.
  • Be active but less visible in the business to break language barrier and sentiments.
  • Service related business are less risky.
  • Pay attention to details and be very very proactive. Know what works in your environment (especially in marketing).
  • As much as possible, avoid business with fixed monthly or rental cost.
  • Engage the service of a lawyer if there is a need.
  • Explore international markets and online possibilities (it’s a cheaper way of running a business).
  • Watch your back, especially when you have only indigenous employees and your language proficiency is little.
  • Employ smart people, ensure work conditions are clearly stated and be very diplomatic with your employees.
  • Avoid free and cheap services, when you succeed they will be envious and demand more.
  • Don’t be emotional, be businesslike, fire and hire if you have to.
  • Continuously improve on and distinguish your product or services.
  • Read, learn and always consult experienced people in your area of business

My watch word and perspective: If you never try you will never know what you can do, winners always try and never quit, even if they fail; failure is not so bad, it’s only an opportunity to learn, to start again and to be better Believe you have the power within you to achieve your dreams, visions and goals. Always know that you can be who ever you want to be, there are no limits

Finally… Be optimistic, surround yourself with positive people and never give up!
